I am very saddened to learn that our famous physicist and outstanding educator, Mr. Qi Qingquan, died on June 30! Mr. Qi Qingquan has long been engaged in the research of atomic and molecular physics, high pressure physics and physical mechanics, and has made significant contributions to the creation and development of superhard materials. In 1975, his academic work "Artificial Diamond" was the first monograph in the field in China. Mr. Qi Qingquan's research on the synthetic mechanism of synthetic diamond has greatly promoted the development of technology in this field in China and abroad. He started and led the research on high-pressure physics and super-hard materials at Jilin University, which laid a solid foundation for the establishment of the later national key laboratory of superhard materials. After Mr. Qi Qingquan came to Sichuan University (Chengdu University of Science and Technology) in 1982, he proposed that "you must first establish a scientific research base to train your teachers, train graduate students, and then develop talents, produce results, and develop disciplines."
