Since the process of forming a silicon ingot and cutting a battery cell can be omitted, the manufacturing cost of the module can be reduced to 0.4 U/W. SOLEXEL is a venture company established in 2007 and has approximately 50 employees. Pawan Kapur, vice president of the company, said, "This is the first time the company introduced a detailed manufacturing method." In the manufacturing method, first, a porous silicon film is formed on a substrate, a light absorption layer, ie, a single crystal silicon film (having a film thickness of 43 μm), is formed thereon by epitaxial growth; and then, after a metal film such as aluminum is formed, a pattern is formed by using a laser. The electrodes are formed; the flexible material is finally overlaid, and the epitaxial silicon film and the upper portion thereof are peeled off from the substrate. The substrate is intended to be reused. The size of the battery cell is the same as that of a standard crystalline silicon solar cell and is 156 mm square. 20.1% of the unit conversion efficiency is the official value measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). SOLEXEL said that after the improved battery cells obtained more than 21% results.
