Hefei Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences prepared an amorphous oxide with an intermediate absorption band

Recently, Li Guanghai, a researcher at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences, used high-energy pulsed laser irradiation to produce amorphous titanium oxide with intermediate absorption bands—intermediate band titanium oxide. Related results were published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A (2015, 3, 11437-11443) and have applied for invention patents.

Titanium oxide is widely used in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, photovoltaic power generation and other solar energy applications, known as "solar materials." Since the band gap of titanium oxide is in the ultraviolet region, the energy absorption efficiency in the visible and infrared regions, which account for 93% of the solar radiation, is very low, which greatly limits the effective utilization of solar energy by titanium oxide.

In order to solve the above problems, the research team used high-energy pulsed laser irradiation technology to produce amorphous titanium oxide with intermediate absorption bands—intermediate band titanium oxide. The middle absorption band between the amorphous titanium oxide conduction band and the valence band acts as a “ladder”. The valence band electrons excited by the long-wavelength photons are absorbed by the intermediate band's relay and enter the conduction band; short-wavelength photons can directly excite the valence band. Electronic transition to conduction band. Titanium dioxide in the middle has significant absorption efficiency and excellent visible light catalytic activity in the wide solar spectral range of the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared regions. Working with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Li Guanghai's research group found that intermediate-band titanium oxide can significantly improve the photoelectric properties of dye-sensitized solar cells. Titanium oxide in the middle zone is expected to be applied in the fields of environmental pollutant treatment and energy conversion.
