Research progresses in manufacturing quantum logic gates using pure light

Canadian physicists have made progress in research using pure light to build the logic gates of the quantum computer's basic components. They have succeeded in influencing other beams with single photons. The related papers were published in the latest issue of Nature Physics.

The logic gate operates on the input data to create a new output. In traditional computers, logic gates take the form of diodes or transistors. But quantum computer components are made from single atoms and subatomic particles. According to quantum theory, information processing will be accomplished through the interaction between particles.

Photons have many advantages in quantum computing, but it is always a difficult problem to let them interact with each other in a useful way. The latest research from the University of Toronto shows how to create such interactions.

According to the researcher of the Quantum Information and Quantum Computing Center at the University of Toronto and senior researcher at the Canadian Institute of Advanced Technology, Evelim Steinberger, the new study shows the effect of single photons on other beams. Beams of light in general can pass through each other without affecting each other. To build a light quantum computer, the beams must “talk” with each other, but they have not been implemented with single photons before.

The researchers first shot a single photon on a helium atom that had been cooled to a millionth degree above absolute zero. Photons then “entangle” with the atoms, affecting the way in which the Helium atoms interact with a single light beam. Photons change the refractive index of an atom, causing a small but measurable “phase shift” in the beam.

This process can be used as an all-optical quantum logic gate that implements input, information processing, and output. Steinberger said that the quantum logic gate is the most significant application of this research. It can be observed that these interactions have opened a new page in the field of optical research.
