The good news is that the "Science Progress" magazine recently reported that the research team of Monash University in Australia led by Dr. Mahdokht Shaibani has found a new type of lithium-sulfur battery structure that is sufficiently stable and is expected to increase the battery life of smartphones to five days. It is reported that the new structure can make lithium-sulfur batteries have unprecedented charge and discharge efficiency, thereby increasing the typical battery life of smartphones to several days. Dr. Mahadkot Chabani pointed out: Ironically, because the capacity of the sulfur electrode of the lithium-sulfur battery is too large, it has often been difficult to cope with the resulting strong pressure in large-scale applications before, causing it to easily crack. This stress-induced deformation and connection failure of critical components—that is, the carbon matrix responsible for transferring electrons to the insulating sulfur and the polymer binder that binds the two materials together—will ultimately lead to battery performance Decay quickly. In light of this, Shaibani worked with an international research team to start looking for ways to connect the two more firmly. Interestingly, instead of using adhesive materials to form a dense network, she decided to "give some breathing space for sulfur particles." As shown in the figure, the new lithium-sulfur battery structure still relies on traditional binders, but it adopts different treatment methods to form a super strong bridge bond between the carbon matrix and the sulfur particles, which The battery expands leaving extra space. In other words, the research team created a similar network, but only placed a minimum amount of binder between adjacent particles, thereby increasing the space to accommodate structural changes and the stresses they generate. In preliminary experiments over 200 cycles, the new lithium-sulfur battery structure has shown a glimmer of hope-the charge and discharge efficiency exceeds 99%. To its knowledge, such high-capacity electrodes are unprecedented. The researchers pointed out that the new battery is expected to bring up to five days of battery life for smartphones, or allow electric vehicles to travel more than 1,000 kilometers without charging. Subsequently, it plans to further expand the test to explore the prospect of being an EV power battery or solar energy storage battery. At the same time, the research team also applied for related patents. Compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries, the new lithium-sulfur battery structure not only improves performance, but is also expected to significantly reduce costs and reduce environmental impact.
