Compared with the conventional coating, the new coating improves heat resistance and hardness by further refining the crystal particles (Fig. 1). The new coating has a hardness of 3800 Hv and an oxidation resistance temperature of 1200 °C. Long life can be achieved in both dry and wet processing. Since the adhesion to the base material is higher, it is possible to achieve a more stable processing than the conventional coating.
The company has applied the new TH coating to two ball end mills and launched the "Epoch New TH Ball" series (Figure 2). Among them, "Epoch TH Hard Ball Strong" uses a ball shape with excellent rigidity and chip discharge. Hitachi Tools has developed a nano composite coating "Advanced TH Coating" that has higher wear resistance and oxidation resistance. In the cutting of high hardness materials, the service life is twice that of the previous "TH coating".
