1) Regular check of gas detector

As with other analytical testing instruments, gas detectors need to be regularly calibrated. The calibration period for general instrumentation is one year. However, because of the special use of gas detectors, it is recommended that the gas detector be tested every two weeks. If conditions permit, it can be sent to the local qualified inspection department for testing. Another relatively simple method of verifying the sensor is to place the gas detector in a known concentration of the test gas, and then compare the sensor reading with the gas concentration. This is also known as a collision test.

It is worth noting that some gas detectors on the market can test different gases by replacing different detection sensors. However, this does not mean that a gas detector can be equipped with different detector probes at any time. After replacing the detector probe sensor, it takes a certain period of time for the sensor to activate, and the detector must also be recalibrated for calibration.

2) The service life of the gas detector probe (sensor)

Sensors in all types of gas detectors have a certain number of years of use. In portable instruments, LEL (gas permeable) sensors have a long life and can generally be used for about three years; photoionization detectors have a lifespan of four years or more; electrochemical specific gas sensors have a relatively short lifespan, generally In one to two years, the life of the oxygen sensor is the shortest, about one year. The life of the electrochemical sensor depends on the dryness of the electrolyte, so if it is not used for a long time, sealing it in a lower temperature environment can extend the service life. Because of the relatively large size of the stationary instrument, the life of the sensor is longer. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the sensor at any time, and pay special attention to the service life.

3) Detection interference between different sensors

Each type of sensor responds to a specific gas, but any type of gas detector cannot be absolutely effective. Therefore, when selecting a gas sensor, it is necessary to know in detail whether other gases interfere with the detection of the sensor, so as to ensure the authenticity of the gas detected by the gas detector.

4) Concentration measurement range of gas detector

Different gas detectors have a calibrated gas concentration detection range, which is used within the calibrated concentration detection range to ensure that the detector measurement results are true and reliable. Exceeding the calibrated concentration detection range will cause damage to the probe (sensor) of the gas detector or serious consequences such as burning.

For example, if the LEL detector is inadvertently used in a 100% LEL environment, it may burn the sensor completely. The toxic gas detector may cause damage to the sensor when used for a long time at a higher concentration. Therefore, if the gas detector detects a signal exceeding the limit when the fixed instrument is in use, turn off the power switch immediately to ensure the safety of the instrument.
