New breakthrough in battery research: LiO2 battery can store five times the power

Smart machine users have been waiting for years, but the battery capacity of the device is still not growing. However, thanks to the latest breakthrough in battery research, this desire will soon come true. According to IFLScience, the study published in Nature described a prototype of a "lithium-oxygen battery." It is based on lithium superoxide (LiO2) and can store five times the energy of current lithium batteries. In the past, this technology has proved to be difficult to develop. Due to thermodynamic instability, the purity of synthetic solid superoxide cannot be guaranteed.

However, researchers have found that by using a suitable graphene cathode, crystalline superoxide can be kept stable in Li-O2 cells, thus keeping the cell away from the possibility of overheating.

Larry Curtiss, one of the co-authors of the paper, stated in an official statement issued by the Argonne National Laboratory:

Although more research is needed, this study has opened up a potential path for the development of new batteries. At present, we are focusing on improving the cycle life of batteries.

Curtiss also explained the use of lithium superoxide storage energy to lay the foundation for the development of lithium-air batteries. The latter is a closed system, so it does not require continuous intake of oxygen and is safer and more stable than open systems.
