Silicon solar cells achieve 24.1% conversion efficiency

On June 27, 2016, the United States SunPower announced that the conversion efficiency of silicon solar panels reached 24.1% at the R&D level, which exceeded the previous world record.

The result of this time is the use of solar cells with an average efficiency of 25% under the R&D level, and panels made of the company's “X-series” structure.

The area of the solar panel is 11310.1cm2 (open area) and the output power is 272.5W. As assessed by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) National Institute of Renewable Energy (NREL), a conversion efficiency of 24.1% was achieved.

The highest record for the conversion efficiency of silicon-based solar panels was Matsushita's 23.8% in March 2016. SunPower's record is 0.3 percentage points higher than this.

SunPower achieved a 22.8% conversion efficiency in February 2016. This time exceeded both the company's own record and Panasonic's record.

However, the company did not elaborate on what technology was used this time to improve conversion efficiency. From the "X-series" word, it is estimated that monocrystalline silicon solar cells are used, followed by the back contact structure.
