NEC Discovers New Carbon Material "Carbon Nanobrushes" Expected to Improve Battery Performance

NEC announced on June 30th, 2016 that it has for the first time in the world discovered a carbon material called "Carbon Nanobrush". This new material can improve the performance of batteries and sensors and can also impart conductivity to plastics and rubber.

Carbon nano brushes are made by polymerizing carbon nanohorns (CNH) in a fibrous form. The diameter is about 100 nm and the length is about 1 to 10 μm. Carbon materials that used CNH in the past were CNH spherical polymers (spherical CNH). Carbon nanobrushes and spherical CNHs are characterized by their high dispersibility and difficulty in agglutination. The difference between the two is in the electrical conductivity. Carbon nanobrushes have more than 10 times the conductivity of spherical CNH. The reason is that the distance between the spherical CNHs dispersed in the base material is relatively long, and the electrons of the carbon nanobrush pass through the connected fiber structure, and the current easily flows. When a carbon nanobrush is used as a conductive material for a battery electrode, the charge/discharge speed can be increased by 10 to 15%.

In addition, the specific surface area of ​​CNH is large, and therefore, the "adsorption" of other substances can be maintained on the surface. Using this feature, it can be used as a high-performance adsorbent.

Carbon nanobrushes are produced by irradiating a carbon rod target containing an iron catalyst with laser light. Although almost the same method as the spherical CNH, the spherical CNH uses an iron-free carbon rod target. As long as the target is changed, mass production (1 kg/day) can be performed on the same scale as spherical CNH.

In the future, NEC will jointly conduct material verification and mass production development with material manufacturers and research institutes. We plan to provide sample in 2017. (Reporter: Nozawa Mori)
